Other Site Characteristics

Området består af 3 lavvandede fjorde, de tilstødende kystnære dele samt en del af Karrebæksminde Bugt. Karrebæk Fjord og Dybsø Fjord udgøre et fjordsystem afskærmet mod Karrebæksminde Bugt af øerne Enø og Dybsø. Kun gennem kanalen, Karrebæksminde Havn og det dybe strømløb, Dybsø Havn, samt gennem et smalt sund mellem de to øer har de lavvandede og til dels rørskovsbræmmede inderfarvande åben forbindelse til havet. Karrebæk Fjord er en lavvandet fjord med flere grunde og småøer. Kun få steder er dybden større end et par meter. Fjorden er gennemskåret af en dybere sejlrende fra Næstved Kanal til Enø, samt andre ikke så dybde render. Susåen udmunder i bunden af fjorden. Dybsø er en særdeles lavvandet fjord med mange grunde, der er mere eller mindre tørlagt ved lavvande. Dybden er i hele fjorden mindre end 2 m. I området ligger den meget bevaringsværdig dybsø som er en så godt som ubeboet ø. Avnø Fjord er en lang, lavvandet og beskyttet fjord med en dybere (ned til 7 meter) central del. Fjorden afskæres af halvøen Knudshoved som strækker sig 14 km ud i Smålandshavet. Halvøen repræsenterer en randmoræne afsat af Storebæltgletsjeren i istidens sidste fase. De yderste dele af morænen har tidligere raget op af havet som øer, men de er nu med drag forbundet med de øvrige øer og Sjælland, så en sammenhængende halvø er dannet. Halvøen Avnø strækker sig ud i Avnø Fjord. Her findes en militær flyvestation. (Hentet fra habitatområde #148).I fuglebeskyttelsesområdet indgår desuden yderligere tilgrænsende kyst-områder og øen Gavnø. Disse områder rummer agerland, strandenge og strandsumpe samt skovene på Gavnø og Appenæs, Vejlø Skov, Jarskov og Knudsskov.

Området er en fuglelokalitet af stor værdi. Her forekommer væsentlige ynglepopulationer af flere bilag I arter og ikke mindst rummer det i vinterhalvåret meget betydelige populationer af rastende vandfugle (regelmæssigt over 20.000 individer). Området er af særlig betydning for Knopsvane (Cygnus olor). området er endvidere et vigtigt overvintringsområde for flere arter af rovfugle særlig Havørn (Haliëtus albicilla).
