Guldborgsund består af et langt, smalt sund med en dyb central del omgivet af lavvandede områder, hvor der er rige forekomster af undervandsvegetation. I området indgår desuden strandenge ned mod sundet samt en skovomkranset mosestrækning.

4.2 Quality and importance

Området rummer kun ret ubetydelig bestande af ynglende bilag I arter, derimod har området betydning som rasteområde for en række vandfugle særlig Knopsvane (Cygnus olor) og Taffeland (Aythya ferina). Formentlig er områdets betydning størst i isvintre hvor strømmen gennem det smalle farvand vil bevirke at der er åbent vand længere end i mange af de omkringliggende områder.
