Other Site Characteristics

Området, der ligger i hjertet af Bornholm, er forholdsvis stort og sammenhængende og udgør et af landets største skovkomplexer. Det består af flere forskellige skove: Almindingen, Indlægget, Vestre Indlæg, Åker-, Pedersker-, Øster- og Vestermarie-, Povlsker- og Bodilskerplantager og Paradisbakkerne. Området var tidligere dækket af lyng og krat og kaldtes højlyngen. Sidenhen i starten af 1800-tallet blev området plantet til med nål. Lokaliteten er nu dækket af nåleskov (ca. 60%), mest rødgran, og løv (ca. 40%). Bundlaget består af grundfjeld af granit, ofte overlejret med et tyndt morænelag, men også ofte blottet i klippeflader. I den vestlige del dækkes klippebunden ofte kun af tynde gruslag, mens den østlige del er mere leret og stedvis fugtig-våd. Dele af området, bla. Paradisbakkerne gennemkrydses af karakteristiske sprækkedale, med lodrette klippevægge og en lav frodig vegetation i bunden. Sprækkedalene er opstået ved isens og smeltevandets eroderende virkning. Almindingens østlige del står på temmeligt højtliggende, men kun lidt kuperet terræn, mens den vestlige del står på meget kupeeret terræn, med sprækker. Området indeholder mange moser og søer. NB: At this site the habitat type 6210 is to be considered as non-priority.

4.2 Quality and importance

H: Habitatområdet er af største betydning, både nationalt og europæisk. Dette skyldes både de mange naturtyper og arter, men også det store antal rødlistede arter. Derudover indeholder Almindingen naturelementer, der er meget usædvanlige for den danske natur, der er her bla. tale om sprækkedalene og partierne med blottet klippe mm. EF: EF-fuglebeskyttelsesområdet indeholder meget diverse skovpartier samt mose-, hede- og engarealer. Det varierende landskab er ynglested for store bestande af mere almindelige skovfugle som Skovsneppe (Scolopax rusticola) men også usædvanligt mange fuglearter, der ellers er sjældne i Danmark yngler her. Det er derfor også ornitologisk set et område af største betydning. Ølene er fredet som vildtreservat i 1942 med forbud mod jagt og adgangsforbud hele året. Desuden er Ekkodalen, Vallensgård og Kærgård moser og dele af Paradisbakkerne fredet.
