Other Site Characteristics

Området er en stor vadehavsø med klitheder og kær samt temporære he-desøer og strandenge. Langs østkysten finder man tagrørsumpe. I området indgår desuden nogle mindre nålebevoksninger. Størstedelen af det sydlige Fanø er fredet (ca. 1.400 ha). Det fredede areal afgræsses med får. Yderligere er det givet støtte til at ca. 1.100 ha strandenge afgræsses for af hindre tilgroning. Nord- og sydspidsen af øen er indhegnet for at beskytte de kystfugle (Dværgterne og Hvidbrystet præstekrave), der yngler i områderne.

4.2 Quality and importance

Fanø udgør sammen med EF-fuglebeskyttelsesområderne nr. 49, 52, 55, 57, 60, 65 og 67 den internationalt mest betydende danske fuglelokalitet. Langs Fanøs lavvandede kyster findes to vigtige ålegræsbede (Keldsand og Søjord) af stor betydning især for Knortegås (Branta bernicla). Fanø huser en række ynglende bilag I-arter, f.eks. findes en stor bestand af Dværgterne (Sterna albifrons). Desuden findes en ynglebestand af den rødlistede Hvidbrystet præstekrave (Charadrius alexandrinus). Der er registreret forekomster på mere end 20.000 vandfugle (svaner, gæs, ænder, vadefugle) i begge optællingsperioder (1983 og 1993-94)
