Other Site Characteristics

Lønborg Hede ligger vest for israndslinjen; ca. 5 km sydøst for Ringkøbing Fjord. Nord og syd for heden dyrkes traditionelt landbrug, mens plantager grænser op til heden umiddelbart øst og vest herfor. Selve heden kan groft skitseres, som en lavtliggende klokkelyngshede med indslag af hedemose, kær, sø og å samt en højereliggende tør indlandshede. De topografiske forhold har begunstiget denne todeling af heden, idet heden indenfor kort afstand har niveauforskel på op til 10-15 meter, således at den tørre hede nærmest fremstår som et plateau. Der er egentlige søer på den fugtige del af heden. Igennem en af disse (Bredkær) løber Strygbæk å. Hvorvidt søen og åen er eutroficeret af oplandet vides ikke, men muligheden herfor er tilstede.

4.2 Quality and importance

Lønborg Hede er de tilbageblevne dele af tidligere tiders vidtstrakte heder syd for Tarm. På Lønborg hede findes både tør og fugtig hede, indslag af hedemose, kær, sø og å. Særlig karakteristisk er det, at klokkelyngen dominerer over store områder. Den fugtige klokkelynghede på Lønborg er i modsætning til langt de fleste heder i Jylland næppe fulgt efter skov, men kan føres direkte tilbage til de heder, som dækkede landet i de første årtusinder efter istiden. På Lønborg Hede er der således mulighed for at studere både en uforstyrret jordbund samt hedevegetationens udvikling over meget lange tidsrum. Lønborg Hede blev fredet i 1970 er derfor af stor betydning, da sådanne områder er yderst sjældne i Danmark. Lønborg Hede er tillige en af de få, omfattende klokkelyngheder, der fortsat findes i Danmark. Lønborg Hede klassificeres som værende af meget høj botanisk værdi. Der vil således kunne findes flere danske rødlistearter. (2, 3 & 4)
