Other Site Characteristics

Son dos embalses de riego construidos con materiales "blandos" ( barro y cañas) sobre una depresión inundable. Alrededor de ellos existen varias charcas artificiales que se explotan con fines cinegéticos y piscícolas.

4.2 Quality and importance

Es la segunda zona húmeda en importancia de la C. Valenciana después de L'Albufera. Resulta de gran importancia para la conservación de hábitats ligados a aguas saladas, destacando sobre todo el excelente estado de conservación de los pastizales salinos y los matorrales halófilos mediterráneos. Alberga varias especies vegetales endémicas. Pero sobre todo, "El Hondo" destaca por su importancia para la conservación de varias especies de aves acuáticas amenazadas, siendo el principal lugar para la nidificación de la cerceta pardilla (Marmaronetta angustirostris) y uno de los principales para la malvasía cabeciblanca (Oxyura leucocephala) y uno de los tres lugares españoles en que nidifica el flamenco (Phoenicopterus ruber). Sitio designado como RAMSAR, más de 20.000 aves acuáticas invernantes habitualmente.
