Conjunto de pequeñas sierras en las estribaciones de las Sierras de la Umbría y la Solana de Alcudia, en su límite oriental, caracterizadas morfoestructuralmente por su relieve "apalachense", con materiales de cuarcitas y pizarras de edad paleozoica que, dada su gran resistencia, forman crestas escarpadas en las cimas de las sierras. Los cursos fluviales (Río Guadalmez) presentan lechos arenosos, muy permeables, formándose tablas y charcas durante el periodo estival y mostrando una vegetación riparia de marcado carácter termófilo (adelfares, tamujares, etc.).

4.2 Quality and importance

Zona de extraordinario interés para la avifauna, propuesta como ZEPA por albergar la principal zona de concentración premigratoria de Cigüeña negra en la Comunidad Autónoma de Castilla-La Mancha, con nidificación de esta especie, además de una importante población nidificante de Aguila perdicera, Aguila real, Alimoche y Cigüeña blanca. Por otro lado, se propone esta zona como LIC por la presencia en las laderas de estas sierras de formaciones vegetales bien conservadas de bosque y matorral de quercíneas, enebral, matorral de mancha y acebuchar, dado el caracter marcadamente termófilo de esta zona. A lo largo del curso del Río Guadalmez, existen valiosas formaciones riparias de adelfares, tamujares, fresnedas, saucedas, juncales, etc., que sustentan poblaciones de Nutria, Tritón verdinegro y diversas especies de ciprínidos de interés, como el jarabugo.

- Planes de conservación/recuperación: a) Decreto 275/2003, de 09-09-2003, por el que se aprueban los planes de recuperación del águila imperial ibérica (aquila adalberti), de la cigüeña negra (ciconia nigra) y el plan de conservación del buitre negro (aegypius monachus), y se declaran zonas sensibles las áreas críticas para la supervivencia de estas especies en Castilla-La Mancha.
