El área comprende en su mitad Oeste varios llanos (de norte a sur: El Diviso, El Escaque, Llanos de Medina, Mafasca y LLanos de los Alares) que se prolongan hacia el este a través de valles abiertos (Valle Hondo, Barranco de la Boca, Barranco de Antigua-Barranco de la Torre y Barranco de la Boca de Pozo Negro). Separando a estos barrancos se localizan los cuchillos (formaciones montañosas lineales de cumbre plana, generalmente pertenecientes al promer ciclo volcánico - Mioceno - formada por la acumulación de piroclastos y coladas basálticas) que incluyen Rosa del Taro, Montaña del Sombrero, Cuchillete de Buenavista, Macizo del Agudo y más al interior Morro de los Halcones. Las llanuras predegosas fueron cubiertas por coladas y piroclastos basálticos del segundo ciclo (Plioceno-Cuaternario) y han sido profusamente erosionadas. Los usos del territorio han sido tradicionalmente los ganaderos y los agrícolas. El pastoreo ha sido la actividad más relevante y que más incidencia sobre el territorio ha tenido. En el seno del área se encuentran núcleos de población como Las Pocetas, Casas de Majada Blanca y Casas del Cortijo.

4.2 Quality and importance

La calidad del territorio viene definida por la presencia de ambientes esteparios localizados en los llanos interiores, terrosos-pedregosos, donde es posible encontrar matorrales de matos y aulagas (formados por especies de los géneros Salsola, Launaea, Suaeda y Lycium) donde se encuentran poblaciones sendentarias de hubara canaria y otras aves esteparias. En los cuchillos, en la mitad oriental de la ZEPA se encuentran algunas parejas de guirre. También se encuentra una población de Cuernúa. El estado de conservación es aceptable, debido a los que los usos tradicionales, principalmente el pastoreo, están disminuyendo en el área y se aprecia una recuperación lenta del territorio.
