Other Site Characteristics

La zona propuesta se sitúa en el suroeste de la isla. En concreto, se localiza en el municipio de Yaiza, y abarca los llamados Llanos de La Mareta y un tramo de costa acantilada de la zona del Rubicón. Los Llanos de la Mareta se extienden hacia el Sur por Los Monturrios Pardos, que dan lugar a algunas hoyas que se sitúan en un área pedregosa, en la que apenas crecen algunas plantas, y por lo que carece de condiciones agrarias; es lugar de pastizales, de tal manera que abundan los nombres locales con referencia a animales, como Hoya de las Yeguas, de las Vacas, de Asnos, etc. Al acercarse a Los Ajaches (macizo montañoso del sur de Lanzarote que se sitúa al Este de la zona) el terreno se eleva con cierta suavidad inicialmente pero a continuación existen algunos salientes como la Tegala del Pendón. La costa del Rubicón, muy pedregosa y con abundante tabaibal. En su parte Norte, cerca de la costa, en Rincón del Palo, se inició la urbanización Atlante del Sol, en la actualidad abandonada. Toda la costa de El Rubicón presenta un acantilado de menos de 20 m. de altura. La vegetación está representada por matorrales (Salsola vermiculata, Suaeda vermiculata, Chenoloides tomentosa) y pastizales.

4.2 Quality and importance

El lugar es una zona importante para las aves esteparias, y en la franja costera se localizan algunas colonias de aves marinas. Con relación al Anexo I de la Directiva de Aves, destaca la presencia de la hubara canaria (Chlamydotis undulata fuertaventurae), el corredor sahariano (Cursorius cursor), el alcaraván común (Burhinus oedicnemus insularum), la ganga (Pterocles orientalis), el camachuelo trompetero (Rhodopechys githaginea amantum), el águila pescadora (Pandion haliaetus), el petrel de Bulwer (Bulweria bulwerii) y la pardela cenicienta (Calonectris diomedea).
