La Zona de Especial Protección para las Aves de "Carrizales y Sotos del Jarama y del Tajo" se localiza al noreste de la provincia de Toledo en la Comunidad Autónoma de Castilla La Mancha, ligado en su totalidad al curso fluvial de los ríos Jarama y Tajo. En la provincia de Toledo se sitúa en los términos municipales de Seseña y de Borox, y ya con poca representación en Añover de Tajo y Villaseca de la Sagra. La climatología se caracteriza por precipitaciones escasas, con un promedio anual de 450 mm, y por tener veranos secos y caluroso. Geológicamente, se encuentra dominado por terrazas bajas asociadas al río Tajo, llanuras de inundación y antiguos canales o meandros abandonados. Los materiales dominantes son las gravas aluviales y de terrazas y los limos en las llanuras de inundación. En las laderas aparecen materiales terciarios, margas yesíferas y areniscas, favoreciendo de esta forma la dominancia de ambientes halófilos. La vegetación se encuentra representada por formaciones arbustivas y subarbustivas, siendo destacables las formaciones palustres (Phragmites sp. y Typha sp.), los tarayales y los matorrales halófilos. La red hidrográfica principal se encuentra dominada por el río Tajo y Jarama, mientras que la red viaria incluye carreteras comarcales, autopistas y líneas férreas.

4.2 Quality and importance

La abundancia de humedales y sotos asociados a la vega del río Tajo y Jarama y sus arroyos concluyentes confieren a la ZEPA un gran valor ecológico. El bajo porcentaje de ocupación urbana en la zona favorece la buena conservación de los ecosistemas y de sus comunidades, no obstante las explotaciones mineras de la zona configuran la estructura territorial del lugar. De esta forma, aporta importantes refugios para especies palustres como Circus aeroginosus e Ixobrychus minutus, para aves acuáticas como Porphyrio porphyrio e Himantopus himantopus y para otras especies de Charadriformes, favorecidas estas últimas por la aparición de islas de limos y remansamientos del cauce por los frecuentes azudes existentes. Destacan las poblaciones invernantes de azulón (Anas platyrhynchos), avefría (Vanellus vanellus), gaviota reidora (Larus ridibundus), pato cuchara (Anas clypeata) y porrón común (Aythya ferina), remarcando la presencia regular del porrón pardo (Aythya nyroca) y la malvasía (Oxyura leucocephala). Durante el periodo de reproducción, son destacables la presencia de importantes colonias de ardeidas, entre las que sobresalen las colonias de martinetes (Nycticorax nycticorax), garcilla cangrejera (Ardeola ralloides), garcilla bueyera (Bubulcus ibis) y garza imperial (Ardea purpurea) Finalmente, aporta hábitats halófilos de interés europeo en buenas condiciones de conservación, entre los que cabría destacar matorrales halófilos y halonitrófilos ibéricos, pastizales de Juncetalia maritimi y estepas salinas de Limonietalia y yesosas de Gypsophiletalia.
