Other Site Characteristics

El macizo del Penyagolosa forma parte de una encrucijada de ambientes geológicos, biológicos, culturales y sociales. Presenta el segundo pico más alto de la región, con sus 1814 metros de altitud, que hace de divisoria entre las sierras de Gúdar y Javalambre y las montañas ibéricas prelitorales.

4.2 Quality and importance

Alberga endemismos compartidos con las sierras de Gúdar y Javalambre, así como restos de flora eurosiberiana. Presencia de micromamíferos y reptiles muy escasos en la C. Valenciana por su distribución norteña. Alberga poblaciones nidificantes de 20 especies de aves incluidas en el Anexo I de la Directiva 79/409/CEE. La zona es de especial relevancia para la conservación de rapaces rupícolas. Alberga el 11,4% de los efectivos regionales de Buitre Leonado (hasta 35 parejas en 2006) y el 7,9% de la población de Alimoche Común (1 pareja entre 2004 y 2008). Posee hasta cinco territorios diferentes de Águila Real (con un máximo de 3 parejas nidificantes en 2006, el 8,1% del total regional) y cinco de Águila-azor Perdicera (4 parejas en 2003). Existen áreas de matorral mediterráneo que han sido colonizadas recientemente por el Aguilucho Cenizo Los rangos de las poblaciones de aves reflejadas en el apartado 3.2 muestran los contingentes mínimos y máximos registrados en el periodo 2003-2008, elaborados a partir de censos oficiales.
