Other Site Characteristics

Se trata de un prado pantanoso, separado del mar por una restinga de gravas, lo que representa un ejemplo singular de un humedal en avanzado estado de colmatación natural. Existen explotaciones de turba controladas, cuya excavación produce charcas salobres. La zona incluye un área marina.

4.2 Quality and importance

La singularidad de esta llanura litoral permite la existencia de importante abanico de hábitats de aguas dulces y salobres, así como diferentes comunidades dunares, que en conjunto albergan diferentes especies de plantas endémicas (Limonium dufourii, Thalictrum maritimum, etc.) o amenazadas (Juniperus oxycedrus subsp. macrocarpa). Entre la fauna destacan las poblaciones de peces ciprinodóntidos endémicos (Valencia hispanica y Aphanius iberus) y la presencia de poblaciones nidificantes de 9 especies de aves acuáticas incluidas del Anexo I. Destaca el 91,7% de la población nidificante de Aguilucho Lagunero Occidental en la Comunidad Valenciana, el 14,0% de Aguilucho Cenizo y el 17,7% de Canastera Común. Cuenta además con una destacada población nidificante de Carricerín Real. Los rangos de las poblaciones de aves reflejadas en el apartado 3.2 muestran los contingentes mínimos y máximos registrados en el periodo 2003-2008, elaborados a partir de censos oficiales.
