Other Site Characteristics
| La Sierra de Espadán es una zona de montaña de gran valor ambiental que destaca por su singularidad geológica, al constituir un enclave silíceo en el conjunto mayoritariamente calizo de las sierras valencianas. Además, bajo esta denominación se incluye una parte importante de las sierras del curso del río Mijares en la provincia de Castellón. |
4.2 Quality and importance
| Alberga el alcornocal más extenso de la Comunidad Valenciana, así como varias especies endémicas de gran interés. Incluye además dos refugios importantes para murciélagos, la Cova de l'Onder y la Cova de l'Ereta.
Alberga poblaciones nidificantes de 22 especies de aves incluidas en el Anexo I de la Directiva 79/409/CEE. No obstante, la zona es de especial importancia para la conservación de rapaces rupícolas. Alberga el 11,6% de los efectivos regionales de Águila-azor Perdicera (con 11 parejas reproductoras en el censo de 2003), el 16,3% de Buitre Leonado (hasta 63 parejas en 2008), el 8,1% de Águila Real (con 6 parejas nidificantes en 2006) y el 9,5% de la población de Alimoche Común (1 pareja entre 2003 y 2008). Además, posee poblaciones importantes de Halcón Peregrino y Búho Real.
Los rangos de las poblaciones de aves reflejadas en el apartado 3.2 muestran los contingentes mínimos y máximos registrados en el periodo 2003-2008, elaborados a partir de censos oficiales. |
