Espacio marino que engloba las aguas de la bahía de Málaga, desde la desembocadura del río Guadalhorce hasta el límite entre las provincias de Málaga y Granada, frente a los acantilados de Maro-Cerro Gordo. En esta zona, la plataforma continental es muy estrecha, los fondos son arenosos y su profundidad máxima es de 300m. Los aportes del Guadalhorce, junto con las aguas superficiales procedentes del Atlántico, frías y ricas en nutrientes, influyen en su elevada productividad. Por tanto, es una zona favorable para la reproducción y el crecimiento de pequeños peces pelágicos costeros, especialmente la sardina (Sardina pilchardus) y el boquerón (Engraulis encrasicolus). El hábitat destaca por ser especialmente adecuado para el delfín común (Delphinus delphis).

4.2 Quality and importance

Importante área marina de concentración de gaviota cabecinegra (Larus melanocephalus) en los meses de invierno. Durante el inicio de la migración prenupcial, las concentraciones son máximas y alcanzan varios miles de ejemplares. En ambos pasos migratorios, así como en invierno, la pardela balear (Puffinus mauretanicus) utiliza la zona como área de alimentación y descanso.
