Other Site Characteristics

Espacio marino entorno a los islotes del Archipiélago Chinijo, al norte de la isla de Lanzarote, y que se extiende hacia el noreste englobando, así, una importante extensión de aguas pelágicas. Su orientación hace que estas aguas estén fuertemente influenciadas por las duras condiciones meteorológicas. En las costas adyacentes aparecen playas, bajas rocosas y acantilados de mediana extensión, por lo general, así como dos núcleos urbanos.

4.2 Quality and importance

La importancia de este espacio reside en que las aguas que lo conforman rodean el mejor enclave para la reproducción de procelariformes en Canarias. Así, en el entorno de este espacio nidifican, en gran número, el petrel de Bulwer (Bulweria bulwerii), la pardela cenicienta (Calonectris diomedea), la pardela chica (Puffinus assimilis), el paíño europeo (Hydrobates pelagicus), y el paíño de Madeira (Oceanodroma castro). Asimismo, el paíño pechialbo (Pelagodroma marina) cuenta, en este archipiélago, con las únicas colonias de cría del territorio nacional. Estas aves utilizan estas aguas en sus desplazamientos entre los nidos y las zonas de alimentación. En el caso de la pardela cenicienta, también existen algunas zonas de alimentación situadas principalmente al nordeste de la isla de Alegranza. En general, se trata de una zona importante para el paso migratorio de numerosas especies.
