Other Site Characteristics

Los montes de Aldaia son una pequeña barrera orográfica, que apenas alcanza 790 m de altitud, que en mitad de la Llanada Alavesa oriental separa las cuencas de los ríos Zadorra y Barrundia. La litología de la zona es relativamente sencilla, alternando margas y calizas arcillosas. La mayor dureza de estas últimas con respecto a los materiales del entorno ha dificultado su erosión, sobresaliendo sobre el entorno. En cuanto a tipos de hábitats, dos bosques dominan el paisaje. Los carrascales ocupan los terrenos de suelo escaso y soleado donde la encina (Quercus ilex) puede medrar en mejores condiciones que otras especies. Los quejigales, bosque dominado por el roble quejigo (Quercus faginea) ocupan las zonas de suelo más profundo, principalmente en la ladera septentrional y el fondo de algunos pequeños valles en la meridional. El paisaje del entorno está fuertemente humanizado, habiendo sido sustituidos los primitivos bosques por cultivos y praderíos.

4.2 Quality and importance

La fauna entomológica se ha revelado de especial importancia, con la constatación de coleópteros de interés comunitario y el descubrimiento de la especie de cetónido Osmoderma eremita, para la que constituye la única localidad conocida en la Comunidad Autónoma del País Vasco. La fauna forestal de vertebrados también es notable, con representación de rapaces y mamíferos carnívoros.
