Other Site Characteristics
Se trata de una altiplanice que se eleva bruscamente entre la Llanada Alavesa y el valle de Arana y se continúa con los relieves montañosos de la navarra Sierra de Urbasa, al este, y con los Montes de Vitoria, al oeste. Los relieves suaves y amesetados de la porción superior se ven interrumpidos por algunas pequeñas elevaciones y barrancos que emergen del amplio dosel forestal. Igualmente tienen importancia los fenómenos kársticos que afectan al gran paquete de calizas y dolomías de la porción superior, modelando una típica morfología con grietas, lapiaces, dolinas, etc.
A excepción de los suelos agrícolas existentes en las cercanías de los núcleos habitados existentes en el área, el resto de la zona está cubierta por densos bosques de frondosas, sobre todo hayedos, entre los cuales se intercalan áreas de matorrales y pastos. La tradición pastoril de esta sierra es grande, acogiendo durante la época favorable del año gran cantidad de ganado, ovino, vacuno y equino, de los núcleos implicados en la Parzonería.
Aparte de sus valores naturales y paisajísticos propios, típicos de un espacio de montaña aceptablemente conservado, hay que destacar los excelentes miradores naturales que caracterizan los cortados de la Sierra y ofrecen panorámicas únicas sobre los valles circundantes.
La sierra de Entzia está formada, al igual que la contigua Urbasa, por un amplio sinclinal de suave configuración. El eje principal del mismo está orientado en dirección noreste-suroeste, representando las porciones superiores de esta sierra el fondo de un valle colgado. Los sustratos básicos son mayoritarios, condicionando una flora fundamentalmente calcícola. |
4.2 Quality and importance
Se trata de un espacio natural con valores florísticos, faunísticos, geomorfológicos y paisajísticos. Se mantienen usos tradicionales de explotación del suelo, responsables del aceptable estado de conservación de los recursos. La zona alberga una gran extensión de hayedo maduro, con especies singulares, tanto a nivel de flora como de fauna. En las solanas y en el monte Arboro predominan quejigales y marojales. También adquiere importancia la vegetación ligada a la roca, concentrándose en estos ambientes gran parte de la flora de interés.
La extensión de las masas forestales, su grado de conservación y la comparativamente inferior presión humana en la zona, ofrecen una elevada potencialidad para la fauna. Las comunidades faunísticas (especialmente aves forestales y mamíferos carnívoros) son ricas en especies, en correspondencia con la complejidad estructural del bosque. Los pequeños humedales de la sierra, particularmente ciertas charcas y balsas, presentan un elevado interés herpetológico. |
