Espacio fluvial situado en el tramo medio-alto del Río Aragón, entre la localidades de Villanúa y Castiello de Jaca. El río, en este tramo presenta un régimen hidrológico nivo-pluvial, derivado de las grandes altitudes de su cabecera y de las retenciones

Curso fluvial de montaña colonizado en sus márgenes por comunidades riparias de gran interés. Destaca la fauna asociada a los tramos menos alterados del curso y las comunidades vegetales termófilas próximas al tramo encañonado del río.
