Other Site Characteristics

Este río, en su tramo alto presenta un régimen hidrológico nivo-pluvial, derivado de las grandes altitudes de su cabecera y de las retenciones nivales invernales. La parte septentrional de este espacio, constituye un pequeño cañón glacio-fluvio-kárstico que da paso al dominio de un lecho más amplio, con acumulaciones fluviales parcialmente cubiertas por comunidades riparias y bosquetes desarrollados de Pinus silvestris. Destacan, por su grado de naturalidad, los sotos mixtos de alisos, chopos y sauces, frecuentemente jalonados por un mosaico compuesto por prados de siega, que conectan con los quejigares y pinares de las zonas próximas. En la parte norte de la zona destaca un enclave termófilo con comunidades subesclerófilas de carrascar. Los principales impactos se derivan del encauzamiento de alguno de los sectores del cauce y de los usos recreativos. Aguas arriba de Villanúa se sitúa una pequeña presa con aprovechamiento hidroeléctrico.

Curso fluvial de montaña colonizado en sus márgenes por comunidades riparias de gran interés. Destaca la fauna asociada a los tramos menos alterados del curso y las comunidades vegetales termófilas próximas al tramo encañonado del río.
