Other Site Characteristics

Alineación montañosa en disposición W-E que actúa como corredor natural entre el Valle del Isábena, el cual queda limitado por el sur por esta sierra y el valle del río Cajigar, afluente del Noguera Ribagorzana por la derecha. La Sierra asciende en altitud de W a E pasando de los 600m hasta los 1141m de punta Calvera y 1117m. de La Mellera. Constituye el límite sur de las Sierras del flysch eóceno de la Depresión Media Pirenaica y da paso en la vertiente meridional a las formaciones detríticas terciarias del borde de la cuenca del Ebro, con materiales conglomeráticos, areniscas y arcillas. El carácter submediterráneo de las formaciones vegetales y los usos tradicionales del espacio configuran el actual paisaje vegetal, dominado por: bosques de Quercus rotundifolia y eriales de Rosmarinus officinalis, Juniperus oxycedrus y pies aislados de encinas en la vertiente meridional y bosques de Quercus del grupo faginea y pinares de Pinus sylvestris y Pinus nigra en la vertiente septentrional, estos últimos frecuentemente repoblados.

4.2 Quality and importance

Destacan las formaciones de quercineas en ambas vertientes, dominando los encinares en la parte meridional y los quejigares en la parte septentrional. La orientación de esta sierra hace que el espacio actúe como un corredor biológico que interconecta diferentes valles y sierras prepirenaicas.
