Other Site Characteristics

El espacio recoge un sector del tramo alto del río Guadalaviar, desde el núcleo de Villar del Cobo hasta Tramacastilla. Es un río de régimen básicamente pluvial con un marcado carácter mediterráneo, caracterizado por tener máximos de caudal equinocciales y fuertes estiajes durante el verano, aliviados por las frecuentes precipitaciones convectivas en las sierras. En este tramo el río discurre ortogonal a las estructuras de plegamiento cretácicas, por lo que ha excavado un profundo cañón fluviokásrtico con paredes de varios cientos de metros, abiertos fundamentalmente en los materiales calizos de la Sierra. Los sistemas de terrazas están muy localizados y circunscritos a los ligeros ensanchamientos existentes. Es en estos depósitos y en los sedimentos actuales sobre los que se desarrolla una estrecha banda de vegetación riparia fundamentalmente compuesta por Populus nigra y Salix alba. En zonas próximas se desarrollan sabinares y bosques de quercineas de gran interés, junto a algunos pinares. La calidad de las aguas contribuye a la riqueza piscícola. En las paredes calcáreas del cañón anida una abundante y variada avifauna rupícola.

Espacio de gran interés paisajístico que alberga un cañón fluviokárstico con paredes verticales de varios cientos de metros. La vegetación riparia y las comunidades rupícolas son las formaciones vegetales más destacadas.
