Other Site Characteristics

El espacio Natura 2000 consta de un conjunto de cinco túneles de una vía férrea abandonada y sin finalizar, que discurre paralelo al río Ojailén; además de éstos, existen más bocas de túneles en las inmediaciones del río. De norte a sur, el primero de ellos y el más importante tiene una longitud aproximada de 500 m, y permanece inundado en gran parte durante el invierno de los años lluviosos. La boca N está prácticamente taponada por derrumbamientos, quedando únicamente una pequeña abertura de 1 x 2 m. El segundo y tercer túnel están muy próximos entre sí y tienen una longitud aproximada de 250 m y 220 m respectivamente. A partir de aquí el río Ojailén se encajona formando una estrecha garganta a lo largo de unos 2km; en su margen derecha se encuentra el cuarto túnel, inacabado y de aproximadamente 400 metros. El quinto túnel está inundado y no tiene salida.

4.2 Quality and importance

Los Túneles del Ojailén en su conjunto constituyen uno de los más importantes refugios para la invernada de quirópteros en Castilla-La Mancha. Se han detectado en esa época del año numerosos individuos de 4 especies: Miniopterus schreibersi, Rhinolophus euryale, R. ferrumequinum y R.melheyi. Destacan las poblaciones de R. euryale siendo éste el refugio de invernada más importante de la Península Ibérica.El anillamiento y posterior control ha revelado que este sistema de túneles se encuentra relacionado con otros refugios de invernada, como la Cueva de Montrueque y el Túnel del Rincón del Torozo en Toledo, así como con diversos refugios de cría.
