4.2 Quality and importance

Conjunto que engloba las tres zonas de estepa yesosa más extensas, mejor conservadas y más representativas de la provincia de Cuenca. La pureza del sustrato yesoso y la formación generalizada de costra de yeso sobre el suelo son fuertes condicionantes para la vegetación, que muestra aquí el mayor número de especies gipsófilas estrictas observado en la Región para las comunidades adscribibles a la subalianza Lepidenion subulati, que engloba las estepas yesosas del valle medio del Tajo y Alcarrias. Sobre ellas habitan dos endemismos de reducida área de distribución: Brassica repanda subsp. gypsicola y Helianthemum marifolium subsp. conquensis. Aparece también la crucífera catalogada "en peligro de extinción" Lepidium cardamines, junto con especies gipsófilas de gran interés como Teucrium pumilum, Arenaria cavanillesiana, Launaea pumila, Herniaria fruticosa, Centaurea hissopifolia, Thymus lacaitae, etc. En esta zona también existen relictos de encinar sobre yesos, de gran interés por tratarse de muestras del tipo de vegetación climax sobre sustratos yesosos en esta zona. La vegetación de estepa yesosa y los juncales halófilos son hábitats de protección especial en Castilla-La Mancha (Anejo 1 de la Ley 9/1999 de Conservación de la Naturaleza). Además, aparecen en el Catálogo Regional de Especies Amenazadas (Decreto 33/98) al menos las especies Lepidium cardamines (en peligro de extinción), Gypsophila bermejoi (vulnerable) y Teucrium pumilum, Brassica repanda subsp. gypsicola, Arenaria cavanillesiana, Helianthemum marifolium subsp. conquensis, Ephedra fragilis, Ephedra nebrodensis (de interés especial). Se incluyen también cuatro pequeñas zonas de lagunas estacionales mediterráneas.
