Other Site Characteristics

Este refugio de quirópteros se ubica en el paraje "Rincón del Torozo", localizado en la Sierra de Altamira, primera estribación del macizo montañoso de Las Villuercas, cuya línea de cumbres, con una marcada dirección noroeste-sureste, presenta como rasgo geomorfológico destacado las características crestas talladas en duras cuarcitas masivas, propias del relieve "apalachense".

4.2 Quality and importance

Su declaración como Lugar de Importancia Comunitaria se debe a su relevancia como refugio de gran número de quirópteros entre los que destaca el Orden Chiroptera, que utilizan el túnel de una antigua vía de ferrocarril abandonada como refugio de invernada y migración. Las especies detectadas en diferentes censos son el murciélago grande de herradura, Rhinolophus ferromequinum, murciélago mediterráneo de herradura, Rhinolophus euryale, murciélago de cueva, Miniopterus schreibersi, murciélago de oreja partida, Myotis emarginatus, y murciélagos orejudos, Plecotus sp.
