Other Site Characteristics

Espacio situado al oeste de la comunidad al sur del río Tajo, atraviesa los términos municipales de Valencia de Alcántara, Santiago de Alcántara y Valencia de Alcántara. Se corresponde al curso fluvial del mismo nombre que parte desde la Sierra de San Pedro y discurre de sur a norte virando ligeramente al oeste desemboca en el río Tajo, este espacio esta incluido en su totalidad en la ZEPA "Río Tajo Internacional y Riberos", y ejerce de corredor entre los espacios Red Natura 2000 ZEPA-LIC "Sierra de San Pedro" y el del Tajo Internacional, además limita con el espacio LIC "Cedillo y Río Tajo Internacional" y forma parte del P.N. Tajo Internacional. El hábitat presente es el típico mediterráneo con Encinares de Quercus ilex y Quercus rotundifolia.

4.2 Quality and importance

Un total de 18 elementos referidos en la Directiva se encuentran representados en dicho espacio. De ellos 7 son hábitats y 11 se corresponden con los taxones del Anexo II. Entre los hábitats destacan los Bosques de Quercus ilex y Quercus rotundifolia (9340), encontrándose en un porcentaje mínomo Galerías ribereñas termomediterráneas (92D0). Dentro de los taxones destacan mamíferos como Canis lupus y Lynx pardinus, peces de los géneros Barbus, Chondrostoma, Rutilus y Cobitis, así como la galápagos Mauremys leprosa, los invertebrados Euphydryas aurinia y Gomphus graslini y el mamífero Lutra lutra. También encontramos 7 taxones de la Directiva Aves, destacando rapaces como Aquila chrysaetos, Bubo bubo y Neophron percnopterus o la cigüeña negra. Además encontramos una serie de especies de menor importancia a nivel de catálogos como Felis silvestris, Genetta genetta, Meles meles, Monticola solitarius y Natrix natrix.Destaca la importancia del Espacio como corredor ecológico que conecta los hábitats favorables para lince ibérico y lobo ibérico presentes en el Parque Natural del Tajo Internacional con los de la ZIR y LIC "Sierra de San Pedro".
