Espacio que se situa en el extremo más occidental del Prepirineo catalan, sobre un sustrato claramente calcáreo.Sus sistemas naturales combinan elementos claramente mediterráneos, pero principalmente eurosiberianos.

4.2 Quality and importance

Hay que destacar de este espacio el interés biogeogràfico que tiene, al ser un buen representante de hábitats de tipo mediterráneo en la región alpina. Estos hábitats mediterráneos llegan a la región alpina a través del fondo de los valles, originando en algunas zonas microambientes muy particulares y variantes singulares y biogeográficamente significativas de hábitats típicamente mediterráneos.También hay que destacar que se trata de una espacio importante para la representación de determinadas especies, sobretodo de Gypaetus barbatus.
