Other Site Characteristics

Se trata de una zona dominada casi exclusivamente por un masa de Pino laricio en estado puro y de muy buena conservación. El pino salgareño o laricio (Pinus nigra Arnold) constituye una especie compleja desde el punto de vista taxonómico con diferentes subespecies y variedades repartidas por todo el Mediterráneo. La subespecie reconocida para la Península Ibérica es la subsp. salzmannii (Dunal) Franco (CASTROVIEJO & col., 1.986), aunque algunos autores (RIVAS-MARTÍNEZ,1.987), diferencian otra especie para las Sierras Béticas. Forman a menudo masas monoespecíficas estables de tipo submediterraneo que ocupan el piso montano en el Prepirineo catalán y tienen en estas umbrías una de sus mejores representaciones. El sotobosque está constituido por matorral predominantemente de boj (Buxus sempervirens) aunque tambien especies como el guillomo (Amelanchier ovalis) o el avellano (Corylus avellana). A menudo aparece mezclado con quejigos (Quercus faginea) y en ocasiones con alguna otra frondosa (Quercus ilex, Acer opalus, etc.). Este espacio es también un buen representante de la fauna forestal con una típica influencia mediterrànea debido a su buen estado de conservación.

El buen estado de conservación de las masas de pinassa, pino salgareño o laricio son el principal motivo de inclusión de este espacio en la red natura 2000.
