Sierra de separación entre las provincias corológicas Murciano-Almeriense y Valenciano-Catalano-Provenzal. Importancia del paisaje agreste en el límite del semiárido alicantino. Contiene excelente representación de los hábitats "vegetación casmofítica calcícola" y "pastizales mediterráneos xerofíticos anuales y vivaces". Destaca su importancia para aves rapaces.
