Other Site Characteristics

El espacio representa uno de los escasos humedales de la costa mediterránea que todavía conserva las características propias de las zonas estuarinas y los valores ecológicos asociados a estos hábitats naturales. Diversas especies marinas aprovechan las características ecológicas de este espacio para desarrollar funciones básicas de su ciclo vital, como el desove y la alimentación.

4.2 Quality and importance

Este espacio destaca por ser uno de los pocos estuarios de la costa mediterránea andaluza, ecosistema con una importante función ecológica, como zona de refugio, cría y alimentación de diversas especies de peces, moluscos, crustáceos y en el mantenimiento de las pesquerías de mar abierto. La vegetación palustre y ribereña asociada a este tramo del río Guadiaro, constituye el hábitat de diversas especies de aves migradoras incluidas en la Directiva 2009/147/CE. La riqueza faunística de este espacio se encuentra también potenciada por la presencia de especies vinculadas al medio acuático como la boga del Guadiana (Chondrostoma willkommii), la lamprea marina (Petromyzon marinus) y la nutria (Lutra lutra).
