La ZEC juega un papel importante como elemento conector entre el medio marino y el continental, tanto a nivel de continuidad física como de la interconexión y desarrollo de procesos ecológicos.

4.2 Quality and importance

Espacio importante por su función de conectividad ecológica con el río Guadiaro, con el que forma parte de un sistema fluvio-mareal. Siendo muy importante para la conservación de diferentes especies de ictiofauna que frecuentan el estuario y/o el río bien como refugio, para cría de alevines o bien para llevar a cabo la reproducción, destacando entre todas ellas la especie Petromyzon marinus. También es un espacio relevante para el Hábitat de Interés Comunitario 1110: Bancos de arena cubiertos permanentemente por agua marina, poco profunda.
