Other Site Characteristics

Este espacio se compone de brazos de marisma mareal integrados en el sector norte del extenso complejo marismeño que se desarrolla en la desembocadura de los ríos Odiel y Tinto. Esta tipología de humedal se caracteriza por presentar una clara influencia y dependencia del régimen de oscilación de las mareas, que condiciona, a su vez, la biodiversidad que alberga. Así mismo, cuenta con red de drenaje y suelos de escaso desarrollo compuestos por sedimentos de reciente deposición y alternancia de texturas. La redistribución de estos sedimentos y nutrientes de las mareas determina, por un lado, el crecimiento de la marisma como único ecosistema en expansión; y, por otro, que sean considerados como uno de los ecosistemas con mayor productividad del planeta.

4.2 Quality and importance

Importante para hábitats de la Directiva 92/43/CEE. En este humedal del tipo marisma mareal destaca la vegetación halófila mediterránea de marisma que motivó su inclusión en la red Natura 2000, por tratarse de hábitats deficitarios en el conjunto de la Unión Europea. Entre las especies vegetales presentes destaca por su papel ecológico la Spartina maritima, al tener la capacidad de favorecer la creación de nuevas zonas de marismas por medio de retención y acreción de sedimentos. Al mismo tiempo la presencia de estos hábitats permite el desarrollo de una rica avifauna, que nidifica en ellas o las utiliza como zona de alimentación durante la bajamar.
