Other Site Characteristics

El espacio engloba un tramo del río Rivera de Chanza que discurre desde los límites del Parque Natural Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche hasta el límite con la ZEC Río Guadiana y Ribera de Chanza, concretamente hasta el Embalse del Chanza. Sirve de frontera con Portugal durante parte de su recorrido. El Plan Hidrológico del Guadiana lo caracteriza como un río silíceo de piedemonte de Sierra Morena.

4.2 Quality and importance

Este lugar destaca por su especial importancia para la conectividad ecológica, que permite la vertebración de una serie de ecosistemas y el funcionamiento de sus interrelaciones, destacando entre sus elementos la Lutra lutra (nutria), y otras especies de peces del Anexo II de la Directiva Hábitat, endemismos ibéricos entre los que se encuentra el Anaecypris hispanica (jarabugo) y el Barus comiza (barbo comizo), así como la vegetación de ribera representada por hábitats incluidos en el Anexo I de la Directiva Hábitats.
