Other Site Characteristics

Este espacio protegido se compone básicamente de tres ecosistemas: Ribera, dehesa y monte blanco. La ribera se encuentra asociada al arroyo de Pilas y a los cursos de agua temporales que se dan en el espacio. La vegetación riparia se compone principalmente de sauces rojos (Salix purpurea), álamos blancos (Populus alba) y negros (Populus nigra) que componen el estrato arbóreo, y al que se le unen en ocasiones masas de eucaliptos (Eucalyptus globulus y Eucalyptus camalduensis). Acompañando al estrato arbóreo aparece un notable número de arbustos, trepadoras y matorrales espinosos como la madreselva (Lonicera periclymenum subsp. hispanica), la zarza (Rubusulmifolia) o la vid silvestre (Vitis vinifera subsp. sylvestris). El estrato herbáceo está constiuido principalmente por espadañales, carrizales y juncales. La dehesa ocupa más del 60% del espacio, siendo el alcornoque (Quercus suber) la especie dominante, a la que acompañan encinas (Q. ilex) y el acebuche (Olea europaea var. sylvestris). Desde el punto de vista estructural, son formaciones que carecen de sotobosque en la mayor parte de los casos, debido al aprovechamiento al que han sido sometidas históricamente. El monte blanco o jaguarzal sabulícola es una formación de matorral que se distribuye al norte de la Dehesa de Torrecuadros, y está dominada por herguén morisco (Stauracanthus genistoides), jaguarzo blanco (Halimium halimifolium) y amarillo (H. commutatum), cantueso (Lavandula stoechas), y acompañados por arbustos como el acebuche (Olea europaea sylvestris) o el lentisco (Pistacia lentiscus).
