Other Site Characteristics
Presenta un paisaje escarpado con crestas y cornisas en las zonas altas, seguidas de laderas con elevada pendiente que transcurren hacia el mar contactando bien en forma de acantilados verticales sobre mármoles, que en la zona de Cerro Gordo superan los cien metros, o bien en forma de cantiles o pequeños acantilados con alternancia de pequeñas playas o calas constituidas generalmente por arenas gruesas y cantos rodados. En el medio marino, predominan los sustratos blandos que varían entre arenas finas-gruesas, gravas y fangos, mientras que la base de los acantilados junto con las rocas, cantos y bloques procedentes de la erosión de los taludes constituyen los sustratos duros, destacando la presencia de numerosas cuevas, fisuras y grutas que aumentan los ambientes disponibles a ser colonizados por organismos incrementando la biodiversidad del lugar. |
4.2 Quality and importance
Espacio importante para Hábitats de Interés Comunitario, destacando los hábitats asociados a las zonas acantiladas como el 1240 con presencia de especies amenazadas como Rosmarinus tomentosus y Limonium malacitanum. Así como los HIC 5110 y 5220* que constituyen matorrales espinares termófilos singulares con presencia de Buxus balearica, Cneorum tricoccum y Maytenus senegalensis, todas ellas amenazadas. En el medio marino, destaca la presencia de Posidonia ocenica formando praderas (hábitat 1120*) constituyendo una zona importante de refugio, cría y alimentación de diversas especies; así como la amplia distribución del HIC 1110, la presencia del HIC 1170 que alberga numerosas especies de interés como Patella ferruginea, Dendropoma petraeum, Astroides calycularis o Dendrophyllia ramea, y las numerosas oquedades y cuevas existentes que conforman el HIC 8330. Por otro lado, el espacio es importante para las aves, tanto marinas como de ambientes terrestres, algunas de las cuales nidifican en los acantilados. Por último, es relevante la presencia en las aguas del espacio durante sus desplazamientos de Caretta caretta y varias especies de cetáceos. |
