Other Site Characteristics

Es una de las bahías más resguardadas del litoral oriental de la isla, favoreciendo el asentamiento de comunidades propias de fondos someros y resguardados. Los fondos son de arenas claras de origen orgánico, y proporcionan junto a sus limpias aguas una gran luminosidad, por lo que las comunidades vegetales encuentran un gran desarrollo.

4.2 Quality and importance

Es una de las dos bahías más resguardadas y productivas del litoral oriental de la isla de Gran Canaria que está sometido a un intenso hidrodinamismo. Esto hace que este sebadal presente presente una importancia vital en la productividad en ese área de costa. Además por sus condiciones singulares, contiene determinados elementos de interés como la mejor población del alga verde endémica de Canarias (Avrainvillea canariensis). Por otro lado, es una importante zona de cría y reproducción de numerosas especies de interés pesquero, detectándose la presencia de esporádica de Carreta caretta durante sus rutas migratorias.
