Other Site Characteristics

El litoral es recortado y rocoso en su gran mayoría, lo que conforma una gran variedad de hábitats sometidas a diferentes condiciones oceanográficas. A lo largo de esta franja alternan las playas arenosas o de cantos, con rasas intermareales y zonas encharcadas. Los fondos rocosos descienden abruptamente formando acantilados, cornisas, túneles o arcos y cuevas submarinas hasta el lecho arenoso a 15-20 metros de profundidad.

4.2 Quality and importance

Junto a la bahía de Gando, es una de las áreas más productivas y rica en especies marinas de la isla y del archipiélago, dado su buen estado de conservación y la diversidad de hábitats. Básicamente se trata de uno de los sebadales más importantes de la isla, por su estructura, por la biodiversidad que alberga, y por ser un área importante de reproducción, cría y alimentación de numerosas especies de peces e invertebrados bentónicos. Por otro lado, existen poblaciones de especies amenazadas en Canarias y de endemismos canarios que unido a lo anterior dan lugar a un espacio de gran importancia científica, pesquera y recreativa..
