Other Site Characteristics
El lomo del Carretón constituye una faja acantilada de coladas horizontales, que discurre entre los 450 m y los 850 m de altura, desde las estribaciones del macizo de La Mérica, hasta cerca de Epina. Supuestamente, estos basaltos pertenecen a las coladas que rellenaron la gigantesca depresión que en otro tiempo ocupó el centro de La Gomera.
Entre los cortados escarpes sobresale una flora riquísima, con una gran concentración de endemismos (Pimpinella junoniae, Sideritis nutans, etc), donde no faltan especies amenazadas y protegidas como la tabaiba Euphorbia lambii y el cardoncillo (Ceropegia ceratophora). La vegetación más conspicua se compone de especies mayores como el barbuzano negro (Apollonias barbujana ceballosi), el marmulano (Sideroxylon marmulano) y el madroño (Arbutus canariensis), junto a pequeños pinares (Pinus halepensis y P. radiata), resultado de antiguas repoblaciones.
El carácter acantilado de este espacio determina que apenas haya usos en su interior. En su extremo meridional se encuentra la ermita del Monte Santo, a la cual se accede por un sendero en buen estado que parte desde Arure y recorre el acantilado. Cerca del límite inferior, próximo a la población de Taguluche, hay algunas construcciones y bancales, y en las zonas de menor pendiente se practica algo de pastoreo. La abrupta orografía de este espacio no ha impedido que sea atravesado en varios lugares por senderos que asicenden desde Taguluche y Alojera. |

Franja de terreno acantilada de gran valor paisajístico que constituye el referente escénico de las poblaciones de Taguluche y Alojera, posee gran monumentalidad e interés geológico y geomorfólogico. Su riqueza florística y el conformar una excelente muestra de hábitats rupícolas le confiere además valor científico añadido. Comprende también especies amenazadas y protegidas como Euphorbia lambii o Ceropegia ceratophora. |
