Other Site Characteristics
Area acantilada, que discurre paralelamente a la costa flanqueando un amplio tramo de isla baja al norte de Tenerife. Se compone de materiales pertenecientes a la serie reciente III, aunque un sector del acantilado está recorrido transversalmente por las lavas de la erupción histórica de 1706, que sepultó parcialmente el puerto de Garachico.
Su flora alberga restos de antiguos bosques termófilos distribuidos sobre todo por los piedemonte del sector occidental del acantilado. Destacan especies como almácigos (Pistacia atlantica), dragos (Dracena draco), sabinas (Juniperus phoenicea), etc., distribuidas de forma dispersa, junto a tabaibas (Euphorbia spp.) y mosqueras (Globularia salicina). En las áreas más escarpadas abundan las plantas rupícolas que encuentran en este lugar un hábitat ideal. La flora cuenta con algunas especies amenazadas, como el cabezón (Cheirolophus webbianus), que también aparecen en otras localidades del norte de Tenerife.
Este espacio soporta varios usos, debido tanto a la existencia de viviendas aisladas y un núcleo de población en su interior (barrio de las Canaletas), como a la presencia de cultivos de huertas y viñas; estos últimos son particularmente intensos en la zona oriental del área protegida. Las carreteras que cruzan el espacio están bastante transitadas, ya que constituyen una ruta obligada de paso haciea el oeste de la isla. |

Se trata de una acantilado marino fósil , de notable interés geológico y geomorfológico e importante valoración paisajística, que conjuga componentes naturales y de carácter rural, para configurar un espacio de gran valor escénico que enmarca a las poblaciones de la isla baja (Garachico). Alberga, asimismo, poblaciones residuales de bosques termófilos de gran interés científico y algunas especies amenazadas y protegidas como el Cheirolophus webbianus. |
