En el banco de Galicia pueden encontrarse diferentes geohábitats: arenas medias de bajo contenido orgánico (en la zona central de la cima, entre 750 y 1000 m), arenas finas y muy finas en los flancos del banco ( a más de 1400 m), roca plana de la cima con escasa cobertura sedimentaria (1000-1500 m), roca plana sin sedimentación (1000-1500 m) y roca de talud (1500-2000 m). Características generales del lugar: Código 1170. Clase de hábitat: Roca batial de talud con corales blancos, bambú y negros, gorgonias y esponjas. Superficie (ha: 5.768. Cobertura [%]: 0,6. 4.2 Quality and importance

Los fondos marinos del banco de Galicia situados entre 650 y 2000 m están constituidos por hábitats batiales. Entre ellos podemos distinguir por su tipo de substrato, hábitats de fondos blandos o sedimentarios y hábitats de fondos rocosos. Se han encontrado hábitats de interés, tanto para la conservación como de interés ecológico, en ambos tipos de substrato. En el banco estos hábitats están formados por comunidades de antozoos filtradores sésiles, es decir, corales. Se ha optado por un criterio de densidad y desarrollo vertical para la inclusión de esos hábitats en el tipo 1170 Arrecifes. Éste ha sido el caso de las colonias densas de corales de aguas frías formadas por las especies de escleractinias Lophelia pertusa y Madrepora oculata, tanto en roca como en arena. Son de gran interés las comunidades de corales negros (Antipatharia), corales bambú (Isidida), gorgonias y esponjas de gran porte (Hexactinellida y Demospongia). Estas comunidades presentan un gran desarrollo cuando aparecen como fauna acompañante de estos arrecifes, epibiontes, u ocupando los espacios dejados por los corales coloniales (incluidas entonces en el 1170). Cuando aparecen en solitario lo hacen con menor densidad y desarrollo vertical. En todos los casos, estos hábitats tienen gran importancia ecológica y son muy frágiles y vulnerables, especialmente debido a que están formados por especies de crecimiento y regeneración lentos. Sin embargo, sólo se han incluido en la Directiva Hábitats como 1170 aquellos que presentaban una densidad y diversidad suficientes para cumplir la definición de Arrecifes. En cualquier caso, sobre el resto de hábitats formados por colonias discretas o ejemplares dispersos debería realizarse un seguimiento para evaluar su estado de conservación, al ser también de interés. Ocurre lo mismo con los hábitats de fondo sedimentario Arenas con ofiuras y Flabellum chunii, Arenas con Cidaris cidaris y Thenea muricata y Arenas finas con holoturias. Además de su inclusión en el tipo 1170 de la Directiva de hábitats, estos hábitats están incluidos en la lista de hábitats vulnerables y/o amenazados de OSPAR, bajo 5 tipos: arrecifes de Lophelia (Lophelia reefs), jardines de coral (Coral garden), agregaciones de esponjas de profundidad (Deep-sea sponge aggregations), montículos carbonatados (Carbonate mounds). Respecto a la vulnerabilidad, según el criterio definido por OSPAR (OSPAR, 2008), se han descrito poblaciones muy desarrolladas de tiburones de profundidad. Otro valor ambiental, no relacionados con la directiva de hábitats, es la elevada biodiversidad de la zona (687 especies catalogadas hasta el momento), entre ellas especies endémicas, primeras citas para aguas españolas e incluso europeas, y especies nuevas para la Ciencia. Por tanto, la valoración ambiental y ecológica del banco de Galicia, derivada del estado de conservación de sus hábitats y de la baja presión antropogénica, puede definirse como excelente.
