Espacio marino situado en el Mar Mediterráneo, al este de la Península Ibérica, frente a la costa de la provincia de Alicante. Discurre de forma más o menos paralela a la costa, estrechándose conforme se va acercando al Penyal d'Ifac, donde se alcanza la amplitud máxima del espacio marino protegido. Alcanza una profundidad que supera los 40 m en las aguas situadas frente al Penyal d'Ifac. El clima se caracteriza por presentar una elevada humedad relativa en el periodo estival y la existencia frecuente de regímenes de brisas marinas que durante todo el año provocan este aumento de la humedad, determinando un efecto amortiguador de las temperaturas. Toda la superficie marina del espacio se sitúa sobre la plataforma continental. Este sector de Alicante forma parte del dominio más árido y seco de las costas españolas, lo que se traduce también en las condiciones oceanográficas, cuyas aguas presentan unos valores de temperatura y salinidad algo superiores a los de las masas de aguas circundantes. Las masas de agua que bañan el LIC son aguas de origen atántico, tansformadas por procesos de evaporación, mezcla y convección.
