Other Site Characteristics

Pääosa alueesta on ulkosaaristoa ja merivyöhykkeen pienten saarten ja luotojen saaristoa. Eteläosa kuuluu Laitilan rapakivialueeseen. Silokalliot ovat hallitsevia. Irtaimia maalajeja on vähän, pääasiassa ohutta pohjamoreenia. Aluetta käytetään puolustusvoimien harjoitus- ja ampumatoimintaan sekä sotilaalliseen rakentamiseen. Alueella on puolustusvoimien toimintaan liittyviä rakenteita ja laitteita.

4.2 Quality and importance

Kohdealue on erittäin edustava näyte eteläisen Selkämeren luonnosta ja on linnustollisesti lounaisrannikon arvokkaimpia suojelualueita. Alueeseen kuuluva Isonkarin saari on on luonnoltaan ja kulttuuriperimältään arvokas. Kaikki tietolomakkeen taulukoissa3.2 mainitut lajit (lukuun ottamatta populaation merkittävyyden osalta luokkaan D luokiteltuja lajeja) kuuluvat alueen suojeluperusteisiin ja kaikkien niiden suojelutavoitteena on vähintään alueen merkityksen säilyttäminen osana verkostoa. Lisäksi alueen suojelussa painotetaan seuraavia tavoitteita: - Lajien ja niiden elinympäristöjen tila säilytetään turvaamalla luonnon omien prosessien mukainen kehitys ja ohjaamalla käyttöä. Osalla aluetta lajien elinympäristön laatua tai lajin populaation elinvoimaisuutta parannetaan ennallistamis- ja hoitotoimenpitein.

Alue kuuluu Isokaria ja sen lähiluotoja lukuunottamatta rantojensuojeluohjelmaan. Valtion alueille on perustettu Selkämeren kansallispuisto. Alue toteutetaan luonnonsuojelulailla, vesilailla tai kaavoituksella. Alueen suojelu ei rajoita puolustusvoimien toimintaa ja sen kehittämistä.
