Lähemäen metsä sijaitsee koilliseen loivasti viettävässä mäenrinteessä. Alue on pääosin kaskimaata, jota on aikanaan laidunnettu. Kaskeamisesta syntyneitä kiviraunioita ja kookkaita pihlajia niiden läheisyydessä on paikoin. Myöhemmin ihmistoiminnan vaikutus on ollut suhteellisen vähäistä, lukuunottamatta Riistavesi-Kaavi tien oikaisua, joka jakaa alueen kahtia. Alue onkin nopeasti luonnotilaistumassa. Metsät ovat pääosin lehtipuusekoitteisia (hieskoivu, harmaaleppä, rauduskoivu ja haapa). Järeä ja osin lahoamassa oleva vanha koivikko on Majasuolle laskevan puron länsipuolella. Myös puhtaita vanhoja kuusikoita on siellä täällä. Lehtimaapuuta ja pökkelöitä on metsässä paikoin kohtalaisesti. Alueen suot ja kosteikot ovat ojittamattomia ja reheviä. Ne muodostavat norojen ja pienilalaisten rinnesoistumien kautta ehjiä kokonaisuuksia loivasti viettävässä rinteessä. Laajoja kotkansiipikasvustoja on runsaasti norojen ja puron ympäristössä. Paikoin kasvaa myös halavaa. Lehtoja on alueen itäosassa varsinkin lähteen ympäristössä. Lehtolajistoon kuuluvat lehtopähkämö, lehto- ja kaiheorvokki, koiranvehnä, mustakonnanmarja, lehtokuusama ja koiranheisi. Vanhaa seka- ja lehti- ja havumetsää rehevällä pohjalla, reheviä luonnontilaisia suojuotteja ja boreaalista lehtoa. Alueella on kaksi erillistä haavanarinakääpäesiintymää ja ainakin kaksi liito-oravan reviiriä. Eteläosan poikki menee sähkölinja.

Kaikki tietolomakkeen taulukoissa 3.1 ja 3.2 mainitut luontotyypit ja lajit kuuluvat alueen suojeluperusteisiin ja kaikkien niiden suojelutavoitteena on vähintäänkin alueen merkityksen säilyttäminen osana verkostoa.
