Other Site Characteristics

Kongasjärvi on Iijoen sivuhaaran järvilaajentuma. Vesialue on keskusallasta lukuunottamatta hyvin matala. Paikoin saraniitty- ja ruovikkovyöhykkeet ovat hyvin leveitä. Järven rannat ovat monin paikoin soistuneita. Järven pintaa on laskettu, minkä takia rannat ovat rikkonaiset. Kongasjärven vesilinnusto on runsas. Lajistossa on sekä eteläisiä että pohjoisia lajeja. Tavi ja haapana ovat tavallisimmat lajit. Kongasjärven itäpäässä on Päätalon metsälaidun, jonka soistunut ja metsittynyt vesijättö sisältyy lintuvesiensuojeluohjelman rajaukseen. Vesijättömaita on niitetty 1950-luvulle asti. Rannalla on soistuva luhtainen reunus.

4.2 Quality and importance

Kongasjärvi on valtakunnallisesti arvokas lintuvesialue. Se on tärkeä lintujen levähdys- ja sulkimispaikka muuttoaikana. Kongasjärven pesimälinnustoon kuuluu yli 30 kosteikkolajia. Juurikkalahdella on noin 100 lokkiparin yhdyskunta. Alueella on tärkeä merkitys linnuston geneettisen ja lajistollisen monimuotoisuuden säilyttäjänä. Päätalon metsälaidun on paikallisesti arvokas perinnemaisema. Peruste C lintulajeille kohtaan 3.3.: Lajit sisältyvät Bernin sopimukseen. Umpeenkasvaminen uhkaa Kongasjärveä. Alueen suojelutavoite: Kaikki tietolomakkeen taulukossa 3.2 mainitut lajit kuuluvat alueen suojeluperusteisiin ja kaikkien niiden suojelutavoitteena on vähintäänkin alueen merkityksen säilyttäminen osana verkostoa. Lisäksi alueen suojelussa ja hoidossa painotetaan seuraavia tavoitteita: alueella vallitseva lajien sekä niiden elinympäristöjen tila säilytetään pääosin turvaamalla luonnon omien prosessien mukainen kehitys. alueella vallitseva lajien sekä niiden elinympäristöjen tila säilytetään hoitotoimenpitein.
