Alue on luontotyypeiltään monipuolinen ja vaihteleva.Puiston itäosia hallitsevat mahtavat Viibus- ja Maarestatunturien ryhmät, luoteisosaa jyrkkäpiirteinen ja kapea Kietsimätuntureiden jono ja lounaiskulmaa laakeat ja matalat Skärri- ja Peltotunturit. Keskellä jää laaja alanko, jossa tunturikoivua ja harvaa mäntymetsää kasvavat selänteet ja pitkät aapasuovuomat vaihtelevat. Alueella kasvaa maamme pohjoisimpia kuusia. Vaskojoen latvoilla Sankivaarassa on kuusiryhmä (50 kpl), joka on erikseen suojeltu Metsähallituksen päätöksellä vuonna 1956. Vaskonselän länsirinteen kuusiryhmä (5 kpl) on suojeltu Metsähallituksen päätöksellä vuonna 1956. Naali esiintyy vain alueen alpiinisella osalla.

4.2 Quality and importance

Lemmenjoen kansallispuisto on tärkeä pohjoisten metsien, soiden ja jokiluonnon suojelun kannalta. Alueella pesii runsas linnusto. Lemmenjoen kansallispuisto kuuluu kansainvälisesti merkittävien kosteikkojen luetteloon eli ns. Ramsar-alueisiin. Alueella harjoitetaan kullanhuuhdontaa. Kullanhuuhdonta on osa Lapin kulttuurihistoriaa ja sillä on huomattava matkailullinen merkitys. Alueella kasvaa mm. mustasaraa. - vauriot korjaantuvat hitaasti - koneellinen kullankaivuu - moottoriajoneuvojen käyttö, kulku-urat - poronhoito Alueelle ennen suojelupäätöstä myönnetyt valtausoikeudet jäävät sellaisenaan voimaan myös Natura 2000- verkoston alueella. ( Spiini 1 ja 2, Made 32 ). Suojelutavoitteen määrittely: Kaikki tietolomakkeen taulukoissa 3.1 ja 3.2 mainitut luontotyypit ja lajit (lukuun ottamatta edustavuudeltaan luokkaan D luokiteltuja luontotyyppejä ja populaation merkittävyyden osalta luokkaan D luokiteltuja lajeja) kuuluvat alueen suojeluperusteisiin ja kaikkien niiden suojelutavoitteena on vähintäänkin alueen merkityksen säilyttäminen osana verkostoa. Lisäksi alueen suojelussa ja hoidossa painotetaan seuraavia tavoitteita: • alueella vallitseva luontotyyppien ja lajien sekä niiden elinympäristöjen tila säilytetään turvaamalla luonnon omien prosessien mukainen kehitys, • alueella vallitseva luontotyyppien ja lajien sekä niiden elinympäristöjen tila säilytetään alueen käyttöä ohjaamalla, • luontotyypin tai lajin elinympäristön laatua tai lajin populaation elinvoimaisuutta parannetaan ennallistamis- ja hoitotoimenpitein.
