Other Site Characteristics

Metsät ovat runsaspuustoisia luonnontilaisia vanhoja männiköitä ja kuusikoita. Lahopuuta on kattavasti. Paikoin on reheviä lehtomaisia vesilaikkuja ja puronvarsia, joissa on runsaammin raitoja ja muita lehtipuita. Luoston alueelta on löydettävissä lähes kaikki Peräpohjolan suotyypit. Vallitseva nevatyyppi on varsinainen saraneva (Siurunaapa, Pyhälatvanaapa). Tyypillisiä ovat alueen rämeiden lettolaikut. Aapojen laidoilla ja suosaarekkeiden laidoilla on varsinaista sararämettä. Korvissa on luhtaisuus yleistä, myös lettoisuutta esiintyy.

4.2 Quality and importance

Erittäin arvokas vanhan metsän sekä tunturi- ja suoluonnon kokonaisuus. Alueella on erittäin monipuolinen metsä- ja suolinnusto. Useita uhanalaisten eliölajien esiintymispaikkoja. Maisemallisesti keskeinen kohde, joka yhdessä Pyhätunturin kanssa muodostaa laajan geologisen ja ekologisen kokonaisuuden. Poronhoitoaluetta. Suojeluvarauksen sisällä on kaivospiiri, osa kaivospiiristä on kuitenkin rajattu Natura-alueen ulkopuolelle. Kaivospiirin alueella harjoitetaan pienimuotoista, lähinnä matkailutarkoituksessa tapahtuvaa ametistikaivostoimintaa. Suojelutavoitteen määrittely: Kaikki tietolomakkeen taulukoissa 3.1 ja 3.2 mainitut luontotyypit ja lajit (lukuun ottamatta edustavuudeltaan luokkaan D luokiteltuja luontotyyppejä ja populaation merkittävyyden osalta luokkaan D luokiteltuja lajeja) kuuluvat alueen suojeluperusteisiin ja kaikkien niiden suojelutavoitteena on vähintäänkin alueen merkityksen säilyttäminen osana verkostoa. Lisäksi alueen suojelussa ja hoidossa painotetaan seuraavia tavoitteita: • alueella vallitseva luontotyyppien ja lajien sekä niiden elinympäristöjen tila säilytetään turvaamalla luonnon omien prosessien mukainen kehitys. • alueella vallitseva luontotyyppien ja lajien sekä niiden elinympäristöjen tila säilytetään alueen käyttöä ohjaamalla
