Pisavaara kohoaa yli 260 m:n korkeuteen merenpinnasta ulottuen n. 150 metriä ympäristöään korkeammalle. Pisavaaran yläosaa luonnehtivat lakikuusikot, niitä reunustavat muinaisten merten huuhtomat rakkakivikot ja louhikot sekä huippuja erottavat kurut. Näiden alapuolella matalimmilla huipuilla ja rinteillä vallitsevat mänty- ja kuusivaltaiset kangasmetsät, jotka ympäröivät notkelmien pienialaisia lehtoja ja soita. Vaaran reuna-alueilla sijaitsevat laajimmat nevat, letot ja rämeet sekä puistolle ominaiset suurehkot purojen halkomat korpialueet. Alueen kallioperä on muodostunut lähinnä prekambrisista kiteisistä liuskeista, jotka pääosin ovat kvartsiittia.

4.2 Quality and importance

Pisavaaran suojelun pääperusteena on ollut edelleen sen erämainen luonne. Se onkin yksi Peräpohjolan luonnontilaisimmista alueista. Tätä luonnontilaa kuvaavat lahopuiden ja kelojen suuri määrä, erikoiset myrskytuhoalueet, muinaisten metsäpalojen jäljet sekä myös pari tuoretta paloaluetta (kylläkin pienialaisia). Em. seikoista johtuen puisto tarjoaa monille hoitometsistä puuttuville eläin-, kasvi- ja sienilajeille edellytykset menestyä. Esim. vanhojen metsien lintulajeja on enemmän kuin missään muualla lähikuntien alueella. Kohdassa "Muuta lajistoa" mainittujen lajien lisäksi alueelta on tavattu parikymmentä alueellisesti uhanalaista kasvilajia. Ihmistoiminta puistossa rajoittuu valvonta- ja tutkimustyöhön sekä poronhoitoon. Puiston reunoilla olevien soiden vesitalouteen ja sen kautta luonnontilaan on vaikuttanut suojelualueen ulkopuolella suoritetut soiden ojitukset. Suojelutavoitteen määrittely: Kaikki tietolomakkeen taulukoissa 3.1 ja 3.2 mainitut luontotyypit ja lajit (lukuun ottamatta edustavuudeltaan luokkaan D luokiteltuja luontotyyppejä ja populaation merkittävyyden osalta luokkaan D luokiteltuja lajeja) kuuluvat alueen suojeluperusteisiin ja kaikkien niiden suojelutavoitteena on vähintäänkin alueen merkityksen säilyttäminen osana verkostoa. Lisäksi alueen suojelussa ja hoidossa painotetaan seuraavia tavoitteita: • alueella vallitseva luontotyyppien ja lajien sekä niiden elinympäristöjen tila säilytetään turvaamalla luonnon omien prosessien mukainen kehitys.
