Secteur original lié à la présence d'un affleurement de calcaire primaire (Dévonien), fortement plissé présentant un relief vigoureux avec des falaises et des escarpements spectaculaires état de conservation variable suivant les types de sols - excellent pour les escarpements, dalles rocheuses, - en cours d'évolution rapide pour les formations plus mésophiles en raison de la disparition du pâturage par les moutons - nombreux dérangements pour les chauves-souris en raison du développement du tourisme et de la spéléologie récréative

intérêt géologique (stratotype du Givétien) Intérêt faunistique : présence de papillons en limite d'aire, de forts et grottes abritant souvent des gîtes de chauves-souris, d'importantes populations de Lézard des murailles et Coronelle lisse). Intérêt floristique lié à la présence de nombreuses espèces rares, subméditérranéennes et d'une végétation thermoxérophile qui représente ici le plus caractéristique de l'ensemble de la région Champagne-Ardenne. - pelouses xériques des sols superficiels - escarpements verticaux avec microcorniches - pelouses mésophiles - pelouses des dalles rocheuses et buxaies
