Le camp militaire de Mailly-le-Camp constitue un vaste ensemble semi-naturel isolé au milieu des grandes cultures (céréales, luzerne et betteraves sucrières) de la Champagne crayeuse. Depuis la fin de la première guerre mondiale, la végétation y a évolué assez librement ; ce qui confère à cette zone son originalité. La zone retenue a connu une extension des fruticées et des boisements au détriment des pelouses dont les surfaces restantes sont en assez bon état de conservation. Des mesures pour contenir la colonisation des ligneux sur les habitats ouverts devront être mises en place. Le décapage périodique de petites zones du fait de l'activité militaire engendre des milieux pionniers favorables à la conservation de Sisymbrium supinum.

4.2 Quality and importance

La ZSC « Savart du camp militaire de Mailly-le-Camp » est situé sur 2 communes de l'Aube, en Champagne Crayeuse. Du point de vue géologique, la Champagne crayeuse date du crétacé supérieur. La craie, roche sédimentaire formée par l'accumulation des restes calcaires de micro-organismes planctoniques, est blanche, poreuse, tendre et friable. Cette friabilité de la roche a déterminé une topographie constituée de collines peu élevées séparées par des vallons occupés par des cours d'eau ou par des vallées sèches. Comme son nom l'indique, le Savart du camp militaire de Mailly-le-Camp est un des derniers savarts de la région. Il se caractérise par des pelouses steppiques sèches sur sols très pauvres ponctuées d'arbustes et de buissons et dont l'existence à ce jour a été assurée par l'existence des camps militaires. On peut distinguer 3 types de milieux au sein du projet de ZSC : - Les pelouses sèches sur calcaire (les savarts) : ces pelouses rases semi-ouvertes hébergent des espèces végétales rares et/ou protégées comme le lin français, deux espèces d'orobanche et une vingtaine d'espèces d'orchidées représentant la quasi-totalité des espèces d'orchidées de pelouses présentes en Champagne crayeuse. - Les prairies mésophiles : ces pelouses, plus hautes et moins ouvertes du fait de leur implantation sur des sols moins maigres. - Les boisements issus de plantations ou de semis naturels : constitués de pins sylvestres et de pins noirs, ils constituent le premier stade forestier d'évolution des pelouses, avec les fruticées naturelles. En lisière de ces boisements, des ourlets d'un grand intérêt patrimonial hébergent de grandes populations d'orchidées notamment. Par endroits, la tempête de décembre 1999 a permis soit de rajeunir le milieu par un retour à la fruticée, soit au contraire d'accélérer le passage aux premiers faciès de la hêtraie calcicole, avec le retour de semis de hêtre et d'érables.
