Other Site Characteristics

la vallée traverse le territoire de la Champagne crayeuse sur des terrains du Crétacé supérieur. elle est recouverte de formations alluviales. En bon état de conservation mais l'on note un envahissement important par le saule cendré. Le maintien d'une bonne qualité de l'eau est nécessaire pour l'ensemble des groupements végétaux. Le maintien d'un niveau suffisant de la nappe phréatique et une bonne luminosité sont nécessaires afin de maintenir le Caricion davallianae et le Caricion lasiocarpae.

4.2 Quality and importance

Les marais de la Vesle constituent, après le marais de Saint-Gond, l'ensemble marécageux le plus vaste de Champagne Crayeuse. Au début du siècle, il couvrait plus de 2000 hectares. Depuis, de nombreux secteurs ont été drainés puis mis en culture, ou convertis en peupleraies. Certains secteurs ont ausi été exploités pour la tourbe. Comme toutes les tourbières de Champagne, ces marais sont des tourbières plates alcalines topogènes. Elles présentent dans les secteurs les mieux conservés tous les stades dynamiques de la végétation : stade initial à Carex, stade optimal à Schoenus nigricans, stade terminal à cladiaies. On note la présence de nombreuses espèces végétales et animales protégées, plus de cent espèces d'oiseaux, neuf espèces d'amphibiens, trois espèces de reptiles, trente espèces de mammifères (dont sept protégées).
