Other Site Characteristics

le marais de la Superbe est situé sur des alluvions modernes formées de sables et cailloutis présentant par endroit des zones limoneuses ou argileuses, et à d'autres des zones à tendance tourbeuse. Le marais est par endroits dégradé par des plantations de peupliers et ailleurs par reboisement spontané. Certaines zones on été mises en cultures ou en prairies améliorées. La partie amont semble en meilleur état. Le maintien d'un certain niveau de la nappe phréatique et la bonne qualité de l'eau sont les principales conditions requises pour favoriser les groupements végétaux remarquables. L'embroussaillement est une autre source d'altération des milieux.

4.2 Quality and importance

Le marais de la Superbe est une des rares tourbières alcalines, encore en relativement bon état, de la Champagne crayeuse. La zone actuelle est très réduite par rapport à la surface occupée voilà une quarantaine d'années; environ deux mille hectares en 1920. Ce marais est constitué d'une part d'une tourbière alcaline qui s'étend sur la plus grande partie et d'autre part de milieux moins tourbeux situés en aval et s'apparentant à des marais de type alluvial. C'est une des tourbières de Champagne les plus riches au plan floristique (onze espèces protégées). Le cortège faunistique est lui aussi très important.
