Other Site Characteristics

Vallon taillé dans les différents horizons de l'Oxfordien. Très bon état en général, mais une augmentation trop importante de la fréquentation touristique pourrait être à la longue une source d'altération des milieux.

4.2 Quality and importance

Le Cul du Cerf est un site majeur de tout l'Est de la France. Il se présente comme un vaste entonnoir, de pente raide, avec l'exurgence d'une importante rivière souterraine. On note plusieurs autres petites exurgences secondaires appartenant au même cours d'eau souterrain. Ceci entraîne un processus érosif de la côte ce qui entretient des éboulis actifs qui sont probablement parmi les derniers des plaines de France. La variété des milieux écologiques est exceptionnelle. On y observe toute la dynamique depuis les éboulis mobiles jusqu'à la forêt aussi bien en versant d'adret que d'ubac. Il s'agit du seul exemple des plaines de France : forêt calcicole mésoxérophile, hêtraie neutrocline entrecoupée de pelouses à Sesleria et de rochers et éboulis calcaires. Présence d'étangs à characées et une mégaphorbiaie ainsi qu'une importante population de Sabot de Vénus (Cypripedium calceolus) et Agrion de Mercure (Coenagrion mercuriale).
